Shih Tzus were bred to be companions, and they take that job seriously. They tend to be happiest when they're close to their people, whether that's following you around the house or settling beside you for a quiet evening. They don't need huge amounts of exercise, making them appealing for people whose lifestyle doesn't revolve around long hikes or running. They still need regular walks and stimulation, but their exercise requirements are relatively modest. The big trade-off is grooming. That beautiful coat takes work. Owners need to be prepared for regular brushing and, depending on the haircut, professional grooming. Many families choose a shorter puppy cut to make everyday maintenance easier. They're generally cheerful and friendly, but like any small dog, they benefit from gentle handling and sensible supervision around children. If your ideal dog is a close companion who would rather be beside you than miles ahead of you, the Shih Tzu could be right up your street.
