About the Rottweiler

Rottweilers are powerful, intelligent dogs with a reputation that can sometimes overshadow their softer side. With their families, well-socialised Rottweilers can be affectionate, loyal and remarkably devoted. They're also naturally observant, which is part of what made them such capable working and guarding dogs. They're not usually the breed we'd recommend to someone looking for their first completely straightforward dog. Their size, strength and confidence mean that training and socialisation deserve to be taken seriously from the beginning. For an experienced owner who enjoys training and wants a substantial companion, that intelligence can be enormously rewarding. They often enjoy having clear expectations and a close relationship with their people. Their short coat is relatively easy to care for, but the bigger commitment is the dog itself. A Rottweiler needs responsible ownership, good training and thoughtful management around people and animals. If you're looking for a serious dog and are prepared to be a serious owner, the relationship can be incredibly rewarding.
