About the German Shepherd

German Shepherds are serious dogs with serious brains — but that doesn't mean they're cold or aloof. With their people, they can be intensely loyal, affectionate and devoted. They were developed as working dogs, and many still thrive when their daily life gives them something meaningful to do. They're exceptionally trainable and can be incredibly rewarding for an owner who enjoys teaching, exercising and working with their dog. They often form strong bonds with their family and can be naturally watchful of their surroundings. That same combination of intelligence, strength and protective instinct means they deserve thoughtful ownership. A German Shepherd isn't a dog you can simply exercise for twenty minutes and forget about. Good socialisation, consistent training and plenty of mental stimulation matter. For an experienced or committed owner who wants a substantial, intelligent companion, they can be remarkable. For someone looking for a relaxed first dog, they're probably too much dog.
