About the Dachshund

Dachshunds are small dogs with the confidence of something several times their size. Originally developed as hunting dogs, they can be bold, curious and wonderfully determined. Their little legs don't necessarily stop them from believing they're capable of anything. They're adaptable and can live happily in smaller homes, provided they still get regular walks and mental stimulation. They tend to have strong personalities, though, and training can require a little more negotiation than simply asking nicely once. They're affectionate with their people and often very entertaining, but they're not necessarily the best choice for someone wanting a completely biddable dog. Their independent streak is part of their charm. Because of their distinctive body shape, sensible handling and avoiding unnecessary jumping or rough physical play are important considerations. For the right owner, though, a Dachshund is an endlessly entertaining companion: small enough for compact living, but with enough personality to fill the entire room.
