About the Border Collie

Border Collies are spectacularly clever dogs, but that intelligence comes with a catch: they need something to do. A Border Collie isn't usually happiest simply because it has a garden. It wants interaction, learning, movement and a sense of purpose. For the right owner, that is exactly what makes them brilliant. They can be extraordinarily responsive to training and can throw themselves enthusiastically into activities such as agility, obedience, scent work, hiking and other dog sports. Teaching them new things can be one of the most rewarding parts of living with one. The flip side is that boredom can become a real problem. A Border Collie that isn't getting enough physical and mental stimulation may invent its own entertainment. They're affectionate and deeply bonded to their people, but they're not really the breed we'd recommend simply because they're beautiful or clever. If you want a dog to do things with, and you're genuinely excited by training and activity, they're extraordinary. If you want an easy-going housemate, look elsewhere.
