About the Basset Hound

Basset Hounds are patient, affectionate scent hounds with a famously keen nose and an easygoing manner at home. They enjoy regular, unhurried walks and sniffing time, but are not built for strenuous exercise; keep activity comfortable and take care in hot weather. Their short coat is relatively low-maintenance, though their long ears need regular checks and care as advised by a vet. Bassets can be independent when an interesting scent catches their attention, so patient, reward-based training and secure lead or garden management are important. Ask a responsible breeder about breed-recommended health screening and the dog's family health history; screening cannot guarantee future health. A Basset Hound may suit a relaxed household that enjoys steady walks, close company and a dog with a mind of its own.
